We do not define things. We set the limits of application of terms describing things, events and relations. To understand the Yoga and Meditation teachings within the Great Religions of the World and the Mystic Philosophers, a clear understanding of terms which present the teachings is vital if we wish to gain the deep realisation and peace which the teachings convey.

Limit of Application |
Yoga |
Yoga is the method and practice leading to the conscious union of the individual human being with the ultimate source and origin of his being. It aims at the awakening of the egoic-self to the real Self through the process of Reflexive Self- consciousness, a state of transcendent Self-awareness which confers upon the beings who attain it certain powers of adequate response and capacities of stimulus assimilation. |
Concentration |
'with one centre'. It requires that we set up in the mind some single idea of such a kind that to it we can refer every other idea that we have. Such an idea gives us the power of unifying our mind, and so of bringing it into peace and harmony. |
Meditation |
Meditation is a mental process in which we disclose progressively the meaning of our central thought; we must proceed by defining our use of the words we use to express this idea. Our mind compares ideas, notes their similarities and differences, grouping them together in patterns. It is precisely the discovery of a meaningful pattern that is the object of meditation. |
Samadhic Contemplation |
unlike meditation, does not follow a sequence of ideas through time. IT CONTEMPLATES PATTERN. Contemplation is essentially silent; to attain it we must still every mental process. Then the pattern discovered by the meditation process will be able to have its own effect on our mind. |
Relaxation |
'to loosen again' |
Yoga Nidra |
Yoga sleep - deep relaxation of the psyche as distinct from mere 'body relaxation'. |
Sankalpa |
'letting' a seed of intention as an aim for a period of time. |
Philosophy |
The constructing of thought systems aimed to give some formal explanation of total reality to the intellect. |
Religion |
to 'bind back to the Source of all beings' |
Art |
a unity of diverse elements |
Hermeneutics |
the art of interpretation of sacred teachings, texts and scriptures. The art of interpretation: the theory of the discovery and communication of the thoughts and teachings of the scriptures of the world; the science of attaining clarity, both in comprehending. explaining and establishing the sense of traditional and biblical authors. It looks to the individual's own apprehension rather than the conveyance of the meaning ascertained to others, thereby enabling the individual to interpret in the light of his own experience for himself. |
AMEN |
A the Absolute Fire - Fire triad. M the Cosmic Substance - Earth triad. E the Field of Sentience - Water triad. N the Motion of Form - Air triad |
Analysis |
a process by which things are taken to bits to disclose the constituents of a thing. If analysis is carried to its furthest possible term, so that molecules are reduced to atoms and atoms to their smallest sub-atomic quanta, there remains one factor not disclosed - the binding force which before the analysis bound all the constituents together. This force is not in itself analysable, and, if synthesis (reassembly of the constituents in their original relationships) should be possible, then the binding force will function as at first. |
Art |
The articulation of existential elements in such a manner as to restore to them their relations with each other and with the substratum continuum. |
Being |
What is before existence. Being is the non-rotatory substance of which the rotatory modality is existence. |
Buddhist mantra |
Om mani padme hum |
Chakra |
The continuum simply vibrates itself around a given zone and drives this vibrating circle centripetally to bring the vibrations into as strong a compaction as required. |
Compress |
to press together. To press is to posit a vibratory behaviour of the continuum. The continuum simply vibrates itself around a given zone and drives this vibrating circle centripetally to bring the vibrations into as strong a compaction as required. See also 'chakra'. |
Conscience |
The function of knowledge as guide to action in relationships. |
Consciousness |
the word "consciousness" shall be used wherever the contents of a zone of sentience are analysed into discrete forms, kept separate from each other, and yet related by their similarities and dissimilarities. We can hold together all circumscribed forms, similar in that they are bounded by a line, and yet distinguish them, as circles, squares, triangles, etc. |
Creation |
The process which circumscribes zones of motion in the infinite continuum of sentient power. The mode of production of finite, individuated beings. |
Definition |
We do not define things, relations of things, events, etc., but the limits of application of terms. The things of the world are defined by the energies that operate to create and keep them in being. Many problems vanish if we remember this rule. |
Duty |
The shadow of love. What one would do if one loved considered as the model of action for those who don't. What Spirit gets Itself crucified for in order to integrate. |
Existence |
Existence is rotatory. What is before existence is Being. Being is the non-rotatory substance of which the rotatory modality is existence. |
God |
The infinite, sentient, moving power of eternality — Spirit. |
Happiness |
that state in which we seize the essence of every happening as it happens. It is living in the Now so concentratedly determined to extract its essences and message that no energy slops over the edges of the moment to be wasted on the ground. From a hierarchical sense of power to actively posit our own essence. Therefore not 'pleasure', which is 'passivity to a stimulus'. |
Hell |
Frustration of will either for short, medium or long terms. Frustration in the 3-fold being (called eternity) which is the sentient power continuum, is caused by the failure of the individual will to release itself from the self-contradictory nature of its own desires, and the impossibility of the continuum allowing their satisfaction. |
Hierology |
Values contained in the sacred writings of world religions. |
Immortality |
The continuum's impossibility of disintegrating. |
Impossible |
a meaningless word in a world wherein things are but modalities of power and power is will. "Where there is a will, there's a way." |
Integration |
Where particles are gathered together and their binding forces are intimately linked so that the pattern formed by the group is not easily broken we may speak of integration of a relatively persistent order. A human organism is a system of reciprocally interlocking forces with a generally high level of integration such that the organism is able to resist disintegration in a fairly wide field of stimuli. |
Justice |
The balancing of motion-patterns against each other in the continuum. (V. Retribution) |
Language |
it is not the things that our words are intended to refer to that we define, but the limits of application of these words. We do not define a triangle, but we define the area of application of the word "triangle". |
Love |
The will to work for the development of the potentialities of being. |
Mantra |
sayings which are extremely useful in times of difficulty or pain. "I must have needed the lesson", a saying which makes self-pity impossible; and also "it's interesting". Both of these mantra assist assimilation of difficulty. |
Matter |
Closed motion-systems presenting resistance to other such systems. |
Moment |
point of orientation. Time is quantised as moments, for it is made of impulses to orientate. At every point of time one orientates oneself towards or away from some thing, relation or event. The moment is the zone of the intersection of forces, in which the forces act on each other and produce a resultant vector or orientated energy. The whole life of man is one of points of orientation, of decision or choice. Each moment, as an orientation, determines the man in a particular direction, unless he refuses all particular directions and allows the Absolute to act through him. At this moment the will and idea of man and of the Absolute are not different. This identification of man with the Absolute is the goal of Yoga. |
Monism |
The doctrine that the ultimate reality is only substance, whether this substance is conceived as matter or spirit. |
Nature |
The zone of circumscribed actions in which creatures come into existence and have their relations. |
Non-duality - Advaita |
That which precedes the prime unity. `Oneness' is a concept derived from the contemplation of a plurality held together as a whole in the mind. 'Duality' is a concept derived from the breaking of an observed unity. Non-dualism (Advaita) is not Monism. Monism is the doctrine that the ultimate reality is only substance, whether this substance is conceived as matter or spirit. |
Pain |
point of refusal of a too intense stimulus |
Philosophy |
The constructing of thought systems aimed to give some formal explanation of total reality to the intellect. |
Pleasure |
passivity to a stimulus which is assimilable. cp 'pain' |
Punishment |
The reduction of power resulting from the attempt to isolate oneself from the continuum. |
Reason is the eye of the mind. Intuition is the eye of the Soul. Sensation is the eye of the body. |
Sensation tells us that some force is acting upon our body. Reason tells us the form of this force. Intuition tells us that this force is our own self-force. |
Religion |
The binding-back into relation with each other and their source of beings tending to fall out of relation. |
Responsibility & response-ability |
The passive and active modes of response to stimulus situations. |
Retribution |
The effect of sin or isolating action upon its initiating. It comes from the adjustments of the continuum and other beings' reactions to the actions. |
Reward |
Conferring of more power upon a being from its becoming aware of and acting upon its fuller relation with the continuum. |
Salvation |
The washing away of the insulating effect of individual action, so that the individual regains relational function with other individuals and with the continuum. |
Science |
The analytical and synthesising process whereby man becomes conscious of the separate elements of reality (motion-patterns) and of their relations with each other in the continuum of motion-power. |
Sin |
The missing of the supreme mark by the setting up and aiming at inferior or finite marks. To sin is to aim finitely, and so become insulated from one's infinite potentialities of the continuum. |
Society |
The saviour of those men who cannot save themselves. |
Soul |
The circumscribed spirit of God encapsulated in creatures. The individualised spirit is called 'soul'. The soul has consciousness and will, so also has the spirit. The soul is conscious only of what happens to it as an individual. Spirit is conscious of all that happens to all souls and to itself. The knowledge of the soul is finite, the knowledge of spirit is infinite. In the centre of the soul is a point where Spirit meets it. At this point a "dialogue" takes place between the soul and spirit. Soul states what is its individual will, and Spirit states Its universal will. The soul may then will its own individual will or it may will to the same purpose as the universal. |
Spirit |
the first cause of all things. It permeates all things which things are its modifications. These modifications are simply the ways in which spirit acts. The individualised spirit is called 'soul'. The difference between the soul and spirit, is that the soul is individualised or limited, and spirit is not. |
Superstition |
The building upon reality of ideas of things which are not functionally true. |
Synthesis |
reassemblage of all conceivables; a re-manifestation of the original Thesis or Theos from which all derive in acts of creation, and following analysis. |
Term |
Limit of Application |
Truth |
The eternal, infinite, sentient motion and its implications. Death and Resurrection. |
Universal Will |
The universal will is infinite and eternal, The soul's will is finite and temporal. Infinity and eternity are greater than finity and temporality. |
| Manvantara | a cycle of creative manifestation, period of light, time of formal presentation. |
| Pralaya | period of reabsorption, dissolution of a creative cycle back into formlessness. |
